Brooklyn Memories

The closer moving day gets, the more I start looking around and wondering if I'm really leaving New York. I'm really leaving NY. I'm actually leaving NY.
wow.
So I'm editing a video for a friend and I became seriously distracted (I tried not to take too much editing time on this vlog piece) and nostalgic when I started combing through my NY footage - especially Brooklyn. I grew up in Manhattan, the Bronx, upstate NY, but I "lived" in Brooklyn... so it's not easy saying goodbye.
This video is a compilation of stuff from the summer of '04. It's a reminder of the long walks my babe and I took throughout Brooklyn, gettting our daily dose of coffee, Thai food, sitting by the water...
California better be good. ;) This one's for you babe.
Oh, and the music if from the soundtrack of one of the few movies we saw this past summer "Garden State." See it if you haven't already. The band's name is Frou Frou and the song title is "Let Go."

Beautiful.
Err, what are you doing in California again?
By Chuck Olsen, at 4:09 AM
hehe...change of environment, and sort of work related. We've been in NY all of our lives, time for a change and warmer weather. It's painful though, but not permanent.
Plus, can't LA use a shakeup? Wait, isn't that what everyone says? (please don't let me conform, please don't let me conform, please...)

Well California BETTER be good. The way you show your hometown, I wouldn't want to leave. If it isn't permanent that will always be some comfort for you I am sure. It is a dream of mine to at least visit New York one of these days...

yeah, just natural jitters - I've been here forever. I am excited about leaving though. I think people should move away from where they grew up at some point in their lives, for perspective...

California will just be different.
depends on who you know, meet, and hang out with.
you can always come back.
NYC is the shit.
make sure you tell em that.

I liked the clarity of the images, and the letterbox. Would be curious to know what camera you have & the editing tools you use.
By Y, at 12:00 PM
i use a sony dcr-pc330 minidv camera and i put a letterbox matte in final cut pro when i'm editing (that way i have the option to use it or not)

After waking up at 4am with a small bout of insomnia, I happened upon your Grover birthday video. I enjoyed that so much, I had to visit your site, and found this amazing video...of my own neighborhood!!
So, a shout out from North 3rd and Kent Ave- thanks for capturing the beauty of the everyday in my favorite borough, and good luck out west.

Hi Nathan & Thanks! Seems like nobody in Williamsburg ever sleeps. :)

I grew up in Brooklyn and moved to L.A. 10 years ago. Brooklyn never leaves you, but L.A. gets under your skin. I'm addicted to this place now.

Howdy, I really like all your videos, but I absolutely love this video. The choice of music couple with the excellent footage really bring your love of the city across. As a chicagoan for nearly my entire adult life (temporarily taking a break from Chicago) and a huge fan of architecture, urban spaces and the urban aesthetic, I cannot get enough of this video. I think it's an extremely poignent(sp?) look into the local new york culture.
I would love to post a link to it on my blog in the hope of exposing it to a few more people. My blog is a video blog, (actually a media rich blog, has some photowork and flash too) that cellebrates other work. Everything from obscure animations and film clips to movie trailers and music videos. I think some of my viewers would really love your video. Obviously I don't normally ask people to link directly to their video, but I just wanted to be extremely sensitive to the video blogging group to see what people think of what I'm up to. Your's would be the first video blogger video I've included in my video cast.
BTW, what's the song/artist from the Garden State album? I'm not farmilliar with them.
PS. Good luck with your stay in california!

Thats DUMBO! Aww... it's my old neighborhood as well. Thank you for shooting this video, it brings back memories for me as well.

Very inspiring (if that is the correct word) piece of Video (vlog or not), the choice of soundtrack just seems to work with the imagery (IMHO), not sure what the composer of the music had originally intended....(they are from the UK like me.)
The track from the Garden State sound track album is Let Go by "Frou Frou". It is available from Amazon or iTunes.
Thanks again,

Hi, I'm Patrick and I just watched your "brooklynmemories" movie. Very nice! I can understand you are fond of that place; one of my brothers lives in New York (on Broadway) and likes it very much.
But California seems nice to me, so I hope you have a good time there too.

hi. i love your videos that i've seen so far, especially this one. my favorite thing to do with video is putting it to songs in a similar fashion. i just recently started my own video blog. if you'd like to see it, its at www.sarahboyle.blogspot.com

Hi there,
Before today I had never seen a blog or a vlog. I happened upon your vlogs. I was thinking for sure you must have moved out to CA for work in the industry. I am not usually one for comments, but your vlogs are A-Mazing. Your style of shots combined with the energy and message of music had me mezzed. If your not already involved in film work.. think again.. you sure do have a gift that needs to be tapped.
Thanks for sharing.. your inspiring!

Woa. Thank you.
Yeah, moving to CA was a career choice. Let's hope the Universe agrees it was a positive one. I post vids here to share and to get stuff out. You should pick up a camera and try it also. You may become addicted. :)

God, karmagrrrl,
Just found this film posting today (5/6/05). That's my old neighborhood, too. Boy, do I ever miss it.
Even the graffiti is familiar. Clovis Books. Spoonbill & Sugartown.
Think it's time for a karmagrrrl-inspired road trip.
Thought you might enjoy this one filmed on Bedford Avenue. :)
